The Flatlands of Quilchena
On the west side of Richmond, lies Quilchena Golf and Country club. Quilchena can be seen as a short track, at 6781 par 73 from the back tees. Don't let the yardage fool you, this course can cause you some difficulty if you're wayward off the tee. This truly is a fun track that's sure to keep you wanting to come back.

What this course does right
The turf care is top notch. With lush fairways and greens true and full, you will never be complaining about the quality of the grass here. The greens and fairways are moderate in size. Miss in the right spots and you should be able to navigate your way around pretty easily. Miss in the wrong spots and you'll be sure to take a few high scores.

What it doesn't
Being in Richmond you don't see any elevation change, but the proximity to the ocean makes for some interesting wind conditions. The course is simple and flat which can be seen as boring to some golfers. Missing the fairway doesn't always penalize you, so most of the danger lies with the approach shots. Bunkers were good, but sometimes you'll find yourself in one with little sand and that can be frustrating.
Teebox on hole 10 |
Course overall rating- 72
Greens 16/20- Rolling true and decently quick, the toughest part of the greens will be reading the subtle breaks. They were quite receptive to full shots, so if you hit the ball high you'll have no problem going flag hunting.
Tee's 8/10- Tees were well maintained throughout the entire course. On the par 3's where usually after a season of golf they are hacked up but Quilchena does a good job keeping these lush.
Fwy 11/15 - Green and lush but quite soft. It's later in the season so there is not a lot of roll out. Would like to see more firm fairways but being sea level and with the recent rain it's about as good as it can be.
Bunkers 6/10 - The bunkers were inconsistent. Most were good but others there was little sand or it was so compact you were forced to chip it out like a shot out of the short grass. Would like to see better bunker maintenance in the future.
Practice facility 4/5 - The putting/chipping greens are great, but with no practice bunker and the short range there are definitely better places to hone your game.
Aesthetics 12/20 - The turf quality is what makes this course look the way it does. Not a lot in the way of great views or picturesque holes.
Difficulty 7/10 - Not the longest track but not a walk in the park. With trees down either side of every hole missing the fairway by a lot will hurt your scores. Stay straight and you'll still have to deal with the subtle breaks in the greens. (Watch out for holes 15-16, they can make or break a round)
Enjoyment 8/10 - Really what you look for in your everyday course. A fun layout with a few scorable holes makes for a truly great round.
Quilchena Golf and Country Club is one of the best golf courses in Richmond. With the simplicity of the hole design, you won't ever be second guessing where to land the ball. I would highly recommend anybody to go out and experience the amazing quality of golf out at Quilchena.
